The Spirit of Annie Mae In 1975, Annie Mae Pictou Aquash, a 30-year-old Nova Scotia born-Mi'kmaq, was shot dead, execution style, on a desolate road in South Dakota. Nearly three decades later the crime remains a mystery. Aquash was highly placed in the American Indian Movement (AIM), a radical First Nations organization that took up arms in the 1970s to fight for the rights of their people. The Spirit of Annie Mae is the story of Aquash's remarkable life and her brutal murder. It is a moving tribute from the women who were closest to her: the two daughters who fled with their mother when she hid from the FBI; the young women she inspired to embrace Native culture; and the other activists, including Buffy Sainte-Marie and investigative journalist Minnie Two Shoes, who stood in solidarity with her. All are still trying to understand why she met such a violent death. Follow them on their journey as they celebrate the life of a woman who inspired a generation of Indigenous people.

Biography of Nova Scotia born contralto Portia White, who in the 1940' and 50's was often compared to the American Marian Anderson, covering her singing and teaching careers. Uses archival film and TV footage, excerpts from recordings, and interviews with family, friends, pupils and her accompanist, to portray a talented, dignified woman, her career shortened by mismanagement and ill health, but who left an important heritage that is remembered by those who knew her.

Banus, the Horse Thief The film tells the story of a man who falls in love with a woman he kidnapped for someone else. Sadık Ağa wants Rasim Ağa's daughter Zeynep. However, Rasim Ağa refuses to give him his daughter. Sadık Ağa, who wants to have Zeynep, finds a solution in kidnapping her. He asks Banuş, a notorious horse thief in the area, to kidnap the girl. Banuş kidnaps Zeynep in exchange for a sum of money and hands her over to Sadık Ağa. Sadık Ağa immediately begins wedding preparations. Meanwhile, Banuş regrets what he has done. He raids Sadık Ağa's estate, takes Zeynep, and returns her to her father. After these events, Banuş and Zeynep will fall in love with each other.

Welcome to Africville Welcome to Africville gives voice to what may have been marginalized members of an Afro-Canadian community in 1969. It's intention is to be a catalyst to thought and reflection about the lives and struggles of people from that community whose stories still go untold. It is the fictional account of a family. We listen to the stories of three generations of women and their friend Julius on the day their community is to be destroyed by the municipal government of Halifax. This story is a portrait of four individuals coping with universal uncertainties and insecurities.

Brothers in Music John T. Davis (pianist/organist/vocalist) and Jim Heineman (saxophonist) are two Canadian jazzmen who have had to wage the war between the compulsion and the passion that they feel towards their music and the struggle that is involved with trying to make a living in the field of jazz music in Canada. John T. Davis is a Black musician from a poor rural environment. Jim Heineman is a white musician from a white middle-class urban environment.

Journey to Justice This documentary pays tribute to a group of Canadians who took racism to court. They are Canada's unsung heroes in the fight for Black civil rights. Focusing on the 1930s to the 1950s, this film documents the struggle of 6 people who refused to accept inequality. Featured here, among others, are Viola Desmond, a woman who insisted on keeping her seat at the Roseland movie theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia in 1946 rather than moving to the section normally reserved for the city's Black population, and Fred Christie, who took his case to the Supreme Court after being denied service at a Montreal tavern in 1936. These brave pioneers helped secure justice for all Canadians. Their stories deserve to be told.
