Heavily promoted since 1891 as the way to modernization and prosperity, tourism has tragically failed in its promises, as Jamaica is one of the most indebted countries in the world and the third poorest country in the Caribbean. At Sea No Mar is a film about Cecília, the only teacher on a small fishing island. One fateful morning Cecília's daughter Maria asks her best friend Lúcia to cover for her as she goes to the beach to watch her father's boat come in. She never returns. Cecília struggles to deal with the guilt of her daughters death and attempts to embrace the impoverished Lúcia. Lúcia's own struggle with her friends death and eventual confession, forces Cecília to reconcile with her own grief and loss.

Manolita, la Chen de Arc... Manolita Chen became in the mid-eighties the first Spanish transsexual mother who managed to adopt. Through the documentary she tells us about that process, as well as her experiences as a transgressive woman at a time when Spain was not yet socially or legally advanced. We discover a life full of bitterness but without rancor in between, where she nostalgically recalls her facet as a businesswoman and vedette, gradually managing to integrate into her hometown, Arcos de la Frontera, where she currently enjoys the affection and approval of her relatives and neighbors.

When Pomegranates Howl Shot on the streets of Kabul, Granaz Moussavi’s (My Tehran For Sale) outstanding new feature is in the tradition of the great child-centred works of the 1980s when filmmakers such as Kiarostami, Panahi and Amir Naderi (to whom this film is dedicated) were putting Iranian cinema in the forefront of world production. 9-year-old Hewad is an irrepressible, street-smart kid who is energetically working every angle, hustling everything from pomegranate juice to amulets to protection from the evil eye. His real ambition is to be a movie star, and this comes a step closer when he meets an Australian photographer. But in a city where every family has a member who has been “martyred,” the streets are as perilous as they are vivid. Australia’s recent involvement with Afghanistan has been mixed, to say the best. The deeply-felt humanism of this film might just be our most effective contribution to that troubled country.
