Set Theory I-IV Aspects of this piece are related to some of the basic terms used in the branch of mathematics called Set Theory, e.g.: ‘union’, ‘intersection’, ‘difference’, ‘complement’, the ’empty set’, the ‘universal set’, ‘elements’, ‘subsets’, ‘operations’ and ‘groups’. In the first instance the piece involved producing and collating different sets of vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved graphic transitions. These were subsequently combined or sequenced by way of different rules that keep the conflict of planes, forms, tonal values and colour foremost.

Candle Candle is a film that documents a Polaroid developing. It is shot on a 400ft roll of black and white 16mm film at 72fps. The film presents this photographic event in reverse. Over the duration of the film the image of a candle disappears back into the emulsion of the photograph.

Life of Zhang Chu Zhang Chu lives a simple, charmed life in the small town of Tao Yuan. His ex-wife, Cao Shujuan, left him behind to pursue greater dreams in Beijing, while his girlfriend, Li Hong, is back to town from Beijing to pursue a stable relationship with him but ends up failing. The three childhood friends struggle with each other and seek for a way out...

West Window / East Windo... These two films were made with a pinhole lens covering the aperture of a 16mm film magazine. The rooms in which they were shot, and the windows they depict, refer back to cameras in two respects: the camera as ‘room’ (and the camera obscura); and the camera that the filmmaker has put to one side. Having hand-cranked the film to expose it, the traces of light, dark and fleeting imagery are a direct, abstract translation of the filmmaker’s gestures.

Cut Out Cut Out is a largely hand-made piece involving different coloured cards with apertures cut out of them, which have been superimposed in combinations starting from opposite ends of a simple spectrum (from yellow to blue). At the same time, the method of superimposition is more complicated than it might at first seem, adding to the instability of the various planes, edges and colours.
