Film footage and photos taken in the beginning of the 1970s in the village of Maïné-Soroa, in Eastern Niger, are juxtaposed with audio-visual material from Tromsø in Northern Norway. Using a simple, didactic voice-over, the film questions many stereotypes about women’s life in Africa and Norway. It is an attempt to use audio-visual tools and fieldwork experience to teach cross-cultural understanding and ethnocentrism in Norway.

Esset: Soul Of The Gurag... Esset resembles a banana tree. Because of the resemblance, it is so called false banana. It has ever green long leaves, a big stem and edible bulb like root. As compared to other plants, Esset is not grown for its fruit. The whole plant, the stem or trunk and the root, is used as food after careful preparation. Growing this plant is a tiresome venture. From birth to harvest it takes long years. Meanwhile, since it doesn’t require a large area of land it remained the major means of livelihood to the Gurage people. Esset serves as vehicle for the social organization of the people. Acquisition of wealth, rank, and gender roles are associated with the plant. For example, the wealth of a family is exhibited by number and the quality of Esset they own. In addition, it also serves as a milestone in the description of the Gurage identity.
Echagh (The Well)
Echagh (The Well) Echagh (The Well) is a research film on a Tuareg Fraction called Igorareine. They live in a locality called Echgah situated to 40 km in the northest from Gao, nothern Mali. They basically look after sheep, goats, camels, cattle, and have been practising a nomadic life for generations. Nowadays, some of them are about to leave this ancestral way of life due to many loss of animals caused by the desertification of the Sahara. That is how they settled in the surrounding of a colonial well, called Echgh in 1988. A decade later, they created a primary school for their children. Since then, they are thinking about another way of life. But it should be noticed that this newly introduced school system is subject of many interpretations in Echagh. Some of them believes in other opportunities that school may bring about. In contrast others see it as a device which threatens their traditional way of life. Within such a divergent context, the film explores the life choices of three kids.
